Well, here we are, a month away from the biggest Marvel movie in MCU history. All of the horrible things that have happened to the Avengers now fall upon the shoulders of Captain Marvel. From what we’ve seen, Carol Danvers is everything that we had hoped for – she’s funny, proud, and immensely powerful.
So what if she turned? Not to say she is going to, or ever will, but what if at some point the Avengers had to take her down – think Thor versus Iron Man, or Thor versus The Hulk. Which one of the current MCU Avengers would have the best chance? My answer may seem obvious, but it’s the right one: Thor, God of Thunder.
Thor often refers to himself as the strongest Avenger and if we’re talking overall strength, he’s completely correct. Hulk is probably the outright strongest when it comes to lifting heavy things, but Thor’s Asgardian attributes give him the fighting advantage.
When it comes to fighting a being such as Captain Marvel, you have to find a way to meet her strengths. Danvers is imbued with the power of the Space Stone, which gives her the ability to fly at light speed (among other things). One of the main reasons why I would choose Thor as the Avengers’ best bet to defeat her is his ability to fly.
Sure, it’s not real flight like that of Vision or Ironman, but Stormbreaker does give him the ability to travel through the air, which is crucial for a fight against Danvers. Stormbreaker also allows Thor to control the Bifrost, which can teleport him and anyone around him anywhere instantly. That’s a step up from light speed travel if you ask me.
To fight Captain Marvel, you have to be able to take a punch and Thor’s physiology makes him nearly invulnerable. We’ve seen him take some serious blows without backing down.
On Sakaar, Thor was thrown, punched, bashed, shocked, and ground and pounded by Hulk and somehow survived. In The Avengers we see Thor deflect and just full on run through blasts from Loki’s scepter, which is powered by the Mind Stone. We’ve seen him take on and ultimately defeat a fully Reality Stone empowered Malekith in The Dark World despite being repeatedly blasted by the Aether’s powers. When he achieved his full power in Ragnarok he even took on Hela The Goddess of Death after being thrown around like a rag doll and losing an eye. That’s the kind of durability and experience in battle you’d need to succeed in this fight.
While we’re on the topic of Thor’s accomplishments against powerful villains, it’s important to note that he is the only Avenger who was able to severely injure Thanos with the Infinity Gauntlet. Thor’s Stormbreaker works in the same way that we learned Mjolnir did; as a conduit for his power. By focusing all of his strength into one blow, Thor was able to surprisingly sink his weapon into Thanos’ chest, which, even Thanos admitted could have been a killing blow if he had aimed for the head.
After spending time on Earth and being humbled by his love for humans, Thor would never intentionally attempt to kill Captain Marvel in a fight. But if he’s strong enough to kill Thanos with all six Infinity Stones, you’d have to imagine that some of his blows could be staggering enough to stop Danvers in her tracks.
If we look at Thor’s impressive body of work against MCU supervillains, we see that he has directly fought three characters who have been powered by Infinity Stones. Loki, Malekith, and Thanos. That’s way more than any other character has and every time that he’s gone up against one of the Stones’ users he’s defeated them. Well, besides the first encounter with Thanos, but Thor doesn’t have Mjolnir or Stormbreaker in that fight and it wasn’t even shown on screen, so we don’t exactly know what happened.
Captain Marvel received her powers through the explosion of a light speed engine created with the Space Stone’s energy. Somehow the energy she was exposed to along with the infusion of Kree DNA made her extremely powerful.
I’m not going to lie, the exponential power she showed at the end of Captain Marvel is hard to explain because she should only be as powerful as someone wielding the Space Stone. Regardless, Thor has experience dueling users of the Infinity Stones and has even had success against Thanos with all of them at once. It’s not farfetched to believe that he would be able to go toe-to-toe with Captain Marvel, as he has previously with other powerful MCU characters.
This argument is purely speculative and as the MCU is currently setup, with Captain Marvel being the savior of the universe, there’s most likely no one who can defeat her. However, if things did turn ugly after Thanos’ defeat, I believe Thor would have the best chance at keeping the peace.
