As of the time of me writing this article, Facebook, Instagram, and many of the apps associated with the two social media giants are broken, which means that millions of people around the world are in utter dismay. Let’s face it, most people are probably unsure of what to do with themselves now that their faces can’t be buried in their phones.
It’s not every day that such prominent components of society are taken away without warning. I’m sure that many people are checking for updates from Zuckerberg every ten minutes – they wouldn’t want to go an extra minute without scrolling through Instagram if they can help it. But now that we’re all here, waiting around for the most popular activity in the world to come back online, let’s talk about a few things that you can do while you wait.
1. Grab a Bite to Eat, Without Taking a Picture of It
One of the best things about going out and buying food, is actually eating it. Now that you can’t use Instagram, you’ll get to fast forward to that part. Brain storm your list of favorite food places, not the ones that look aesthetically pleasing for the ‘Gram, the ones that make your belly feel nice. Pick one, head over, and enjoy the bliss of eating your food without having to worry about what it looks like.
2. Call Up a Friend To Hang Out With, Actually Look at Them and Have a Conversation
This may seem like no big deal, but when’s the last time that you hung out with a friend and didn’t check your phone every few minutes? Don’t worry, this is your chance to get used to staring at someone’s face for an awkward amount of time again. Remember, eye contact when they’re speaking, and your social media isn’t there to save you from a dying conversation – you’re going to have to put the effort in.
3. Go to the Gym, Don’t Humble Brag About Being There
This one’s important because your health is important. Hit the gym, whether that means lifting weights, running or swimming laps, or simply playing your favorite sport at the local recreational center. While you’re there, you’ll notice that no one is taking selfies or videos of themselves humbly bragging that they’re exercising, which will be very strange. Try to get past that and break a sweat.
4. Read a Book, Without Posting A Boomerang of You Turning the Page
There is nothing like reading a good book to get your day going in the right direction. Whether you go to the book store and pick up a new read, or grab one that you’ve had but haven’t gotten to reading, you can’t go wrong. Oh, and since you’re not going to be posting a repeating video of you turning a random page, or a quaint picture of the book on a desk next to a cup of joe, you’ll get to enjoy the fact that you’re reading just to read.
5. Get Your Work Done, Nothing’s Stopping You Now
If you ended up here there’s practically a guarantee that you’re procrastinating something important. I know that Instagram and Facebook are the two pillars for my procrastination tendencies. Unfortunately for us, no matter how many times we try to refresh our social feeds, they aren’t going to come back any faster. So it’s time to put our phones down, strap in, and take advantage of the fact that we have nothing to stop us from getting our work done. It’s amazing what you’re capable of when your favorite social media apps are broken.
