Super Smash Bros. Ultimate‘s character roster is unprecedented. Unfortunately, in order to take advantage of the wide selection of fighters, you’ll have to make each of them appear and then defeat them.
Out of the 74 characters, only eight are unlocked to play as out of the box (Pikachu, Fox, Kirby, Yoshi, Samus, Link, Donkey Kong, and Mario). That leaves 66 challengers to conquer before you can start to decide who you want to challenge your friends with.
In order to make a new character appear, you’ll have to play the game a ton. According to most sources, the first challenger appears after 10 minutes of playing – actually playing in matches, not just sitting in the character select menu. Once you hit that time threshold, when the match you’re in ends you’ll hear the sirens and see the iconic “Challenger Approaching” screen. Then all you’ll have to do is win that fight to unlock a new character.
Ultimate is unique in the fact that every time you pass the amount of playing time needed for another challenger to appear, the character is completely random. Good luck finding the specific character you’re looking for out of the list of 66.
As you can imagine, doing this over and over again for every character in the game can take a significant amount of time. Thankfully, the dudes over at Polygon have found a way to drastically reduce the amount of time it would normally take to unlock Ultimate‘s fighters.
It all begins with that first challenger. Once you’ve fought against the mysterious foe, win or lose, Polygon recommends that you go back to the Home screen of your Switch, by pressing the Home button. From there you should quit out of Ultimate and reopen the game. Next, you’re going to want to start up a new match, but this time you’ll set the stock (lives) to one. When the match starts you’ll fight through that one life and before you know it, another new challenger should approach upon its conclusion.
In past Smash games, fighting a new character for its playing rights was outright stressful. If you lost, you’d have to do everything over again. Thankfully Ultimate has added the Challenger’s Approach to remedy that feeling of crushing defeat.
When you’ve been stinking it up and have lost to several new characters an orange glowing icon will pop up on your screen. The Challenger’s Approach gives you the chance to fight against characters that you were unable to conquer the first time around in the order that you encountered them. This new mode also lets you fight challengers with any character that you have unlocked, instead of forcing you into whichever one you used that match.
If you’re the type of person who likes to play the game the old-fashioned way, more power to you. This loophole is for people who want to unlock as many characters as they can, as quickly as possible. It’s not the most fulfilling strategy, but when your friends want to brawl, having your favorite character available feels pretty great.
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is set to debut tonight and boy are we excited. Thanks again to Polygon for the awesome character unlocking strategy!
