In the wake of recent data mining and an EA Origin information leak, which seemed to reveal the next Apex Legends character, Respawn Entertainment has come forward and confirmed that the rumors should not be trusted.
Members of Respawn’s team took to the Apex Legends subreddit to explain that more information on future characters and the Season 1 Battle Pass will be released soon, but that we “should not treat any of [the leaked information] as a source of truth.” The full statement can be read below:
“There’s lots of stuff that has been datamined from Apex since launch and is swirling around the Internet. We know this stuff is fun to dig up and speculate about, but you should not treat any of that info as a source of truth. There’s stuff in there that is very old, or things we’ve tried in the past and cut–remember our design process is to prototype and play lots of ideas–and some of it may be things we’re still building for Apex Legends. Finding this stuff by no means confirms that it’ll ever come out. At best you should treat any posts about this as a rumor and the real info will come from us when we’re ready to show off what’s coming next.”
To me, the biggest piece of information that was leaked came from Twitter user @shrugtal, who found an image of a seemingly new character, Octane, somewhere within EA’s servers. Shrugtal claims that the image of Octane initially came with information pertaining to the Legend’s passive, regular, and ultimate abilities, but it was taken down almost immediately after it was found.
Relying on an unverified Twitter user’s solo investigation into the back end of EA’s servers probably isn’t smart, but the image of the character that is allegedly named Octane is hard to dispute. And if we’re being honest, we should hope that Octane isn’t just some old idea that got thrown out along the way, because the dude looks like a ton of fun to play. From here on, let’s go off of the assumption that Octane is real.
Based on the image of Octane’s character abilities, which admittedly may be completely fabricated, he fulfills a niche playstyle that players are going to love. Listen, if I’m Respawn and I didn’t come up with this kit of abilities, I’m looking to hire whoever did. It kind of reminds me of Dr. Mundo from League of Legends, who uses his own health as a cost for his abilities but heals rapidly outside of battle. Octane’s hypothetical passive grants him health restoration over time while out of battle. This means that he won’t rely on Lifeline or healing items to stay healthy and he’ll always have the means to use his tactical ability at the start of a gunfight.
Octane’s hypothetical tactical ability is called Adrenaline Junkie. It increases his movement speed by 30 percent for six seconds in exchange for 10 percent of his health bar and while it’s active, he’s immune to slows. I think that this is such a cool play style idea; it gives players a huge advantage in fights, but cripples them at the same time, which creates a high risk, high reward situation. Either you run in and kill everyone before they can hit you, or you die immediately because of your reduced health bar. It perfectly fits the name Octane.
The kit is tied together with the Launch Pad ultimate ability, which would give players a deployable jump pad that catapults users through the air. This would allow Octane to spot enemies from afar, launch himself directly into them, use his tactical ability and go nuts. It could also be used to get him and his team out of stick situations or simply to the next circle quickly and safely.
Nothing about this leaked kit sounds overpowered, and everything sounds like fun, which makes sense if it came from Respawn. They’ve done an amazing job with character creation as far as balance goes. Sure, the character hitboxes varying drastically in size was a mistake, but a fix is already in the works. I’m praying that Octane didn’t get the axe and I will definitely be using my hard earned Legend Tokens to unlock him if he does get released.
Until then, I’ll stick to my handy dandy Pathfinder, swinging to and from victories.
